Press Release: New Brunswick, NJ

Universal Labs, one of the largest contract manufacturers of sports supplements in the country, announces the introduction of its new corporate logo, the Universal Cosmic Swirl. In association with this updated symbol, the Universal brand, a distinct division of Universal Labs, will now be marketed under the following name: Universal Nutrition.

The following is an interview between Michael Rockoff, Marketing Director and Universal’s Matters’ Editor, Phil Kim. The interview, first appearing in Universal Matters (October 1997) is reprinted here in its full entirety.

Universal Matters: So Mike, why the new logo and why now?
Michael Rockoff: Well let me say we’ve had tremendous success with our current corporate logo, the word “Universal” with the silhouette of a body builder for the letter “I”. In a few short years, we’ve managed to create a recognizable and functional brand identity.

UM: If that’s the case, why introduce a new corporate symbol and potentially risk confusing your consumer base?
MR: You’re right. Many years ago, when Universal entered the market, we were primarily a contract manufacturer, with a small but quality-driven line of our own. In the past few years, our Universal line of supplements has in many ways superseded our contract manufacturing. In that time, people strongly associated our logo with our niche in the market, that is, body building products. Today, we’ve grown tremendously as a company. The Universal line exciting. With the advent of the next millennia, we’re eagerly anticipating our continued growth and evolution. Body building is our bread and butter. But we need to expand.

UM: Is this where the new logo fits in?
MR: Precisely. As a company, Universal manufactures over 5,000 formulas every year. Our color catalog contains over 150 products alone. We’ve got the Naturals Line, the Women’s Line, diet enhancements, liquid maximizers, aminos, carb products—in short, we’re not just limited to body building. As we move into different nutritional arenas, we wanted a new, updated logo to reflect our shifting emphases.

UM: Does that mean you’re going to do away with the body builder logo?
MR: Of course not. We didn’t want a replacement corporate logo. Instead, we wanted a larger symbol representing the entire company, one which would encompass body building products, nutraceuticals and more mainstream nutrition in general. We thought the cosmic swirl would be a perfect fit for our company as we approach the new millennia.

UM: I’ve read the company’s literature on the rationale behind the logo. It makes a lot of sense. I know you’re recently unveiled the new logo at both the Olympia and the Baltimore Natural Products Expo. What was the response like?
MR: Pretty amazing. We thought the new logo might confuse our clients. But it didn’t. In fact, the transition was smooth—most people said the new logo was a logical progression. They loved it.

UM: It’s a great look. When can I expect to get the new Universal logo t-shirt?
MR: We’ve already got them in stock. But you know that. You’ve got one on.
